Ishana Ramdari, the principal of Cornerstone Remedial School, in Durban North, is hoping all its preparations ahead of the first day of school - pay off.

"I just hope it all goes according to plan. At a remedial school, we know that's not entirely possible. We just want the kids to be settled in as quickly as possible. The kids should have an awesome time - we have a nice line-up of activities planned for them today," she says.

She says it will be a smooth start for first time pupils.

"Late last year, we made the transition smoother by just inviting some of the new kids for half a day just so they get used to the environment. That definitely helps a lot," she says.

Excited pupils have been pouring through the gates of Durban Primary in Umbilo this morning. Many of them say they are ready and nervous for the new school year.
