Baby dies in informal settlement fire

A toddler has died as a result of a massive fire that broke out at an informal settlement in Durban over the weekend.

Over 450 dwellings were gutted by the blaze at the Foreman Road Informal Settlement - leaving more than a thousand people destitute.

According to shack-dwellers movement, Abahlali BaseMjondolo - the fire started when a candle fell over and burned down the home of a family before spreading.

The movement's Thapelo Mohapi says they have been informed the two-year-old boy died in hospital.

Mohapi says eight other members of the child's family remain in a critical condition in hospital.

"The fire broke out at the Xulu family's home. The father, mother and child were admitted in King Dinuzulu Hospital. Unfortunately, the latest news we have received is that the toddler has died," he says.
