An infant died and one man suffered burns in an informal settlement fire in Maitland yesterday night.
Cape Town Fire and Rescue spokesperson Theo Layne said the baby burnt to death when the structure went up in flames near Voortrekker Road.
The gender and age of the infant could not be determined due to the severity of the case.
"There were four occupants in the shack at the time and two people escaped unharmed," Layne said.
Two fire engines, one water tanker and a rescue vehicle responded to the scene.
The cause of the blaze remained undetermined.
The incident was handed over to police for further investigation.
