Avoca attempted hijacking: Father laid to rest today

Chetty was killed in a botched hijacking on Thursday evening. His friend Rodney Padayachee had been in the vehicle with him and his children at the time of the incident.

"Even after he was shot on his arm the only thing he was worried about were his children", he said.

Padaychee says Chetty pleaded with him to get his children to safety when three hijackers approached them. He says one of the men then pulled out a firearm.

"He [hijacker] put the gun on my left temple and moved it a little to his left and just pull the trigger. He had shot Kelly. No questions - nothing", Padayachee said.

"After that I saw myself out the car and he proceeded to it me with the gun on my back and he closed the door behind me. Kelly jumped out from the driver's side and ran around the car to the back", he said. 

"He shouted 'Rod, the children, I'm shot!' and then he fell to the ground", Padaychee said.

Two of the suspects were shot dead by police in KwaMashu yesterday morning. 

The third suspect was arrested at a clinic later in the day.
