Many tourists will take to the skies to fly to their holiday destinations next month.

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula was speaking at a media briefing in Johannesburg alongside the SA Civil Aviation Authority.

He reminded travellers that our aviation safety records are among the best in the world.

"We have sustained an impressive safety record over the years because we understand the dangers of expediency at the expense of safety. I would like to remind passengers that aviation remains the safest form of travel in the Republic of South Africa."

He says the country has maintained its category-one status in the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s safety index.

"South Africa still boosts a zero fatal accident rate, a record upheld for more than 30 years. Our expectation is that this philosophy and voluntary compliance attitude is emulated in our general aviation sector, which registered a decrease of 26 percent in fatalities year-on-year."
