Hawks say they are conducting further investigations in the case of a KwaZulu-Natal lawyer on allegations that he demanded R10 000 from a rape suspect to drop charges.
The 49-year-old former Public Prosecutor Advocate Matthews Ngwenya appeared in Durban Specialised Commercial Court on Tuesday.
"The accused in that rape case alleges that during the process, Advocate Ngwenya approached him and said - pay me R10 000 so that I will grant you bail and I will also ensure that the case against you is withdrawn. The accused alleges that he did pay that money to Advocate Ngwenya but however, the accused was sentenced to life imprisonment," Hawks spokesperson, Simphiwe Mhlongo said.
Ngwenya is currently out on R3000 bail and will reappear on the 23rd of July this year.
