Attack on teacher at Mariannridge school leaves educators fearing for their lives

The South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) has condemned the attack on a primary teacher by a parent at a school outside Pinetown.

The parent allegedly stormed into a grade 2 classroom at Mariannridge Primary School on Thursday, assaulting the teacher in full view of the children.

The school subsequently decided to close its doors on Monday for a meeting between teachers, parents and guardians, as the incident has left the school’s teachers feeling unsafe.

One parent told Newswatch that teachers should not be put into a position where their lives are at risk.

"Teachers feel that they are not safe until further notice," the parent said.

Sadtu KZN spokesperson Nomarashiya Caluza said teachers at the school are continually being undermined by parents and guardians.

"It is evident that teachers are no longer safe, even from parents. We are hoping for a solution that will bring hope and trust to teachers. Right now, it is a matter of just that one teacher, but all teachers are frightened and scared because of that incident.

"The Department of Education will have to come in. It is also concerning that the manpower is not enough to assist the school. There is a need for psycho-social support that must be provided to teachers and learners, and the teacher who was attacked by the parent."
