Attack on municipal workers condemned
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Acting eThekwini mayor Fawzia Peer has condemned the attack on municipal workers in Umlazi, south of Durban.
The five Durban Solid Waste workers were targeted in the township yesterday morning. Several vehicles also had their windows smashed. Last weekend, Peer launched a clean-up campaign in Umlazi after several issues with outsourced refuse collectors led to prolonged protests in the area.
The City says it will not allow violence to hamper its efforts to insource the service in Umlazi.
Spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela says the community must help them protect their rights to a clean environment.
"We are calling on the people of Umlazi themselves to partner with us and protect our resources", he said.
"The deputy mayor has also made it clear that nothing will stand in our way of insourcing refuse removal", Mayisela said.
