Western Cape bus accident claims 13 lives
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
At least 13 people have been killed - while more than 10 others sustained serious injuries - when the bus they were travelling in along the N1 near Laingsburg in the Western Cape, overturned this morning.
A number of emergency services responded to the accident. According to ER24 emergency services, the bus had come to rest on its side and had partially gone into a veld next to the road.
ER24's Werner Vermaak has described the scene as "chaotic", adding that the trailer the bus had been pulling was found in the middle of the road.
"The 10 people hurt were in a critical condition, with some of them still trapped underneath the bus. Specialised equipment had to be used to free them from under the wreckage," he said.
Vermaak said the exact cause of the accident is not yet known.
