The National Freedom Party (NFP) says schools, especially those in rural areas, need a security boost urgently.
It made the call after a high school in eDumbe was torched and partially gutted on Saturday.
Kanye Kanye High was set alight, in what is believed to have been retaliation for the matric farewell dance being cancelled.
The party's spokesperson Canaan Mdletshe says this happened days before the start of final matric exams.

He says they are calling on KZN Education to fast-track the provision of security guards in schools.
"No one knows who burnt the school, but the allegation are that during the course of last week, Grade 12 learners were protesting.
"The school principal and the SBG cancelled the matric dance. The learners were now happy about it and they protested from Wednesday and this is very tragic."
Kanye Kanye is said to be one of the schools in eDumbe that achieves excellent math and science results.
