Around 800 homes gutted in eThekwini's Clare Estate blaze
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The eThekwini Fire Department has launched an investigation into what caused a massive fire that gutted about 800 dwellings at the Kennedy Road Informal Settlement in Clare Estate.

Firefighters say they were called after the blaze broke out yesterday morning.
Acting Division Commander of the Central eThekwini Fire, Sifiso Mtshali, says when they got there they were met by chaotic scenes as dwellers frantically tried to douse the blaze with buckets of water.
"There was a large number of displaced residents trying to put out the fire with buckets and hosepipes. We ordered them to stop and move to a place of safety. The fire was very aggressive", he said.
Mtshali says they managed to contain the fire after an hour.
"No persons have been reported as having lost their life, however there was a case of a minor that was reported. It was due to the resident trying to put out the fire without proper protection", Mtshali said.
