Armed suspect shot and killed in Durban
Updated | By Shaun Ryan
A suspected armed robber has been shot dead at Durban's Vusi Mzimela Road formerly Bellair Road this morning.
The man was allegedly shot by the victim he and an accomplice had targeted at about 1am.
Officers say the two suspects approached the victim at gunpoint demanding that he lie on the ground.
Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane says one suspect managed to flee.
"This man produced a firearm and allegedly shot and killed one suspect and the other suspect then managed to flee.
"A case of inquest was opened by the Cato Manor Police for further investigation, but the victim or the person who shot this suspect was not arrested but a docket has been opened for further investigation," he said.
Emergency services who responded to the scene say the robber sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
He was declared dead on scene. Zwane says cellphones thought to have been stolen were also recovered.
It's still unclear if the incident was a failed hijacking.
