Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
Umgeni Water is appealing to residents in areas in and around Ballito, north of Durban, to please use water sparingly.

Technicians have shut down a pipeline that carries water from Hazelmere Dam to Ballito's Avondale Reservoir for 24 hours.
The utility's spokeperson Shami Harichunder says they will be busy installing a connection from Avondale to the Mamba Ridge pipeline.

He says until 6am on Tuesday, 10 areas, including Ballito, Shaka's Rock, Umdoni Ridge, Avondale, Umhlali, Ocean Drive, Tiffany's, Hugh Dent Drive, Addington Trust and Driefontein will have little to no water.
"Mamba Ridge pipeline supplies water to the Mamba Ridge Reservoir in Tongaat. The intention is to support Tongaat by providing some water from Hazelmere Dam.
"It's about two million litres of water that will be supplied to assist in the situation in Tongaat because we know that the situation is quite desperate in Tongaat. There is a dire shortage of water."
