Are Black Friday deals worth the money? Durban shoppers speak

While shoppers have been flocking to malls for Black Friday bargains on Friday, it's been a bit quieter in-store at a centre on the Bluff.

"In the past two months here in the mall, it was so quiet. I think everyone was waiting for Black Friday but only to find out it was not what we expected," says Nhanhla Phakathi. 


Phakathi says he expected bigger savings of around 50% on essential grocery items, but that was not the case. 


"I think they are not putting what the people need. Instead of putting rice on special and maize and oil, they only put Kellogg's and juices [on special]. Nobody needs that."

However, student Thobeka Mbatha says she came out of the supermarket with three trolleys. 


"As we are a family of many members, [there is a] low price on bread and will we have many loaves of bread." 


Amanzimtoti resident Nothando Mthembu says she's not giving in to the Black Friday hype. 


"Unless you have a solid plan of what exactly you want and have the funds to make those necessary purchases, I think you do end up falling into the trap of spending unnecessarily on unnecessary things."
