Anti-Racism Network launched in Durban
Updated | By Khatija Nxedlana
Civil society groups have gathered in Durban for the provincial launch of the Anti-Racism Network.
The Network was started by the Ahmed Kathrada and Nelson Mandela Foundations.
White privilege and the tension between Indian and Black people in KwaZulu-Natal were some of the issues being discussed at the launch at the Coastlands Hotel in Musgrave.
The Network's Sean Moodley says South Africa has developed an arrogance.
"We thought that we don't have to do anything. We thought this rainbow nation is going to carry us into the future. I strongly believe that because the world saw us as champions around this issue, we became arrogant," he said.
Sello Hatang of the Nelson Mandela Foundation says each citizen carries a responsibility to stop racism.
"I think for us, it's important that the 80 organisations that have joined this movement, each one of them says 'Not in my name - I will do anything and everything possible to rid South Africa of racism, to learn about racism in knowing what it is, speak about it and take action to stop it'," he said.
