Anti-rabies drive will include Ballito: KZN Agriculture
Updated | By Portia Cele
KZN Agricultural says efforts to prevent the spread of the rabies virus will be intensified to now include Ballito, on the north coast.
The department, together with a veterinary team, have managed to contain two cases of rabies there. Spokesperson, Khaye Nkwanyane says these were runaway dogs affected by the virus:
"The conclusion that they are making is some of these dogs are crossing over from areas within iLembe District because it's just closer. The teams have already put a process in place. Even in areas in Ballito, they are going to vaccinate," he says.

The virus has been detected in dogs in areas on the north coast including Ntumeni, eShowe and Ndwendwe. One death from the virus has been reported in Bhamshela, outside Tongaat. A toddler died after being bitten by a rabid dog.
Nkwanyane has reassured residents that no other human cases have since been detected. A drive targeting a suspected outbreak of rabies in northern KZN is currently underway.
