Anti-poaching project to be rolled out to more SA parks
Updated | By Christopher Motabogi
A project launched three months ago to fight rhino poaching is bearing fruit at a reserve near the Kruger National Park.
Dimension Data, the ICT company behind the multi-million rand project, says it now plans to roll it out at all of South Africa's parks.
CEO of Dimension Data Middle East and Africa, Grant Bodley says technology is at the forefront of their efforts.
"Making sure we can try and prevent people coming into the park, proactively using seismic sensors, drones, CCTV and biometrics. So, in other words, if we can stop people from getting in contact with the rhino - it is a much more proactive solution than finding out that a rhino is already dead," he said.
Hundreds of rhino have been killed across South Africa over the last couple of years by poachers who are after their horns.
Meanwhile, Cabinet has approved the recommendations made by a Committee of Inquiry on the feasibility of trading in rhino horns that the current mode of keeping the country’s stock levels be kept as opposed to the trading in rhino horns.
