An 11-year-old girl was abducted by three armed men in Mayfair on Wednesday.

She was waiting to be sanitised and screened and standing in a line outside the gates of her school when she was taken.

The Grade 5 pupil's abduction comes days after the release of the Moti brothers, who were kidnapped and held for three weeks before they were released in Polokwane.

Activist Yusf Abramjee says he's very concerned.

"We have seen an escalation of kidnappings over the past few months especially. We know the high profile Moti case and we know there was an attempted kidnapping of a teenager in Phoenix outside Durban yesterday.

"I am even going as far as calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to intervene and to make sure that police act and act decisively, even if it meaning bringing in international law enforcement to help the South African Police Service."

He believes a number of syndicates are behind these kidnappings.

"I would suggest that there is much more than one gang, possibly several gangs. We have the smaller gangs that is trying to make a quick buck.

"Then we have the more bigger organised syndicates, sometimes with international links and they go for big money.

"Very often once the ransom is paid, the victim's family just drop the charges and don't want to pursue it and that is of concern. No wonder the kidnappers are getting away."
