According to reports from the scene, the child, who was with his family at the popular site near Howick, lost his footing on the edge of the falls and plummeted nine metres onto the next landing.

"The Pietermaritzburg Search and Rescue Unit set up a specialised rope unit stretcher to carry the boy to a place of safety. Once stabilised, he was transported to hospital for further treatment," Netcare911's Shawn Herbst said.

On Wednesday a 14-year-old boy had to be airlifted to hospital after he plunged 50-metres off the falls. Herbst says he’s recovering in hospital.

"It's a very round area. If you stand on some algae, that's a huge fall going all the way down," Herbst said.
