Annual crime stats to be released
A day after National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega submitted reasons to President Jacob Zuma on why she should remain in her job, the police ministry is expected to reveal how the country's crime rate had fared under her watch.
Issues of interest would be the murder, attempted murder, aggravated robbery and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm rate, which had increased in the 2013/2014 financial year.
When the statistics were revealed last year, Phiyega vowed to tackle the problem areas.
"We are not going to rest. We will continue putting effort into these areas," she said at the time.
Meanwhile, scores of police officers have also found themselves on the receiving-end of crime. To date, around 60 police officers have been killed in the line of duty this year.
Phiyega has in the last few weeks been thrown in the deep-end following the release of the report of the Farlam Commission of Inquiry which probed, among other things, the police's conduct during the protests at the Lonmin Platinum Mine in August 2012.
A total of 44 people were killed during the unrest.
Phiyega herself testified about her role in the police's action plan. The commission, however, recommended that she face an inquiry into her fitness to hold office.
