ANCYL to persist with protests until ABSA repays bailout
Updated | By Puseletso Petersen
The ANC Youth League has vowed that rolling protests across the country will continue until ABSA pays back money it received during an apartheid-era bailout from the Reserve Bank.
"We are going to close this bank - up until they decide they are going to pay back the money," he said.
A leaked report that Public Protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane recommended ABSA pay back just over R2-billion to the State. It also described the bailout as 'unlawful'.
Members of the ANC Youth League demonstrated outside the bank's branches in Durban and Kokstad yesterday.
Thembo Ntuli, the youth body's chairperson in eThekwini, says they feel former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela could've probed the matter further.
"When Thuli Madonsela was still in office, she didn't do anything about this. This report was there in her office. Now, we are saying that she did well with saying the money must be repaid. They must pay back the money - we want it now," he said.

This comes after the leaking of a #provisional report compiled by #PP Busisiwe Mkhwebane. In it, #ABSA was advised to repay R2.5-billion.
