The league wants Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to succeed Jacob Zuma as ANC leader.

The league's secretary general Njabulo Nzuza says policies that need to be implemented include free education, improved public health care and a state bank to finance industrial and agricultural reform.

"We want leaders who are committed to leading our country towards a social order whose economic system is in the hands of the people as a whole."

Nzuza says the incoming leadership of the ANC must fast-track the implementation of radical economic transformation.

The league says while it is not necessary for all ANC leaders to have struggle credentials, they do need to have been "molded within the party".

"In electing the next leaders of the ANC, the assessment of leadership capabilities must stretch beyond credentials of the exile period, the underground and broader anti-apartheid activism.

"While this remains important credentials in the development of leadership, the ANC also produced a competent cohort of leadership in the post-1994 period," says Nzuza.
