The league says any coalitions must be with parties sharing the same interests as the ANC. Provincial secretary - Thandu-xolo Sabelo briefed the media in Durban yesterday.

He said it was important for the organisation to align with political parties who shared similar political and ideological values, in order to maintain the ideals of the Freedom Charter.

“We are very clear that any political negotiation should not compromise the programme of action of the ANC, which is the attainment of the Freedom Charter. Anyone who is willing to be in a coalition with the ANC must be in a position to accept the Freedom Charter as the basic policy and programme of action of the African National Congress."

Sabelo added that the recent municipal elections will usher in a younger group of leaders in the future.

The league says it's about time, saying they've been calling for young leaders in local governments and at a municipal level for some time.

"Local and district - young people are going to be there as councillors, and also in strategic positions: as speakers, as deputy mayors, members of the executive councils... We are now saying, when the ANC considers municipal managers, heads of procurement, heads of HR, heads of departments, infrastructure - young people must take those positions."
