ANCWL: Summit, marches no help in ending GBV scourge

The ANC Women's League says it's concerned that despite marches, talks, and summits on gender-based violence, the scourge continues to rear its ugly head.

It condemned the murder of metro cop Bianca Khuzwayo, who was allegedly stabbed by her partner in central Durban on Sunday.

The man, who is also a metro police officer, is due to make his first appearance in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

The women's league has said in a statement that the rate at which women are abused, violated, and killed in the country remains worrying and unacceptable.

The group called for justice for Khuzwayo, who it says was pregnant.

KZN detectives on the murder case are also investigating allegations that the man filmed and took pictures of Khuzwayo after the attack and posted them online.

Jabu Mabena, who's with police union SAPU, says the law must take its course.

"We condemn the barbaric act of this law enforcer who denied another person the right to life. As SAPU, we will support that this law enforcer does not get bail. If the law finds him in the wrong, let him serve the longest term in jail."

A delegation from Durban's metro police will visit Khuzwayo's family on Tuesday.
