ANCWL in Northern Cape defies mother body, endorses Ramaphosa

The ANC Women's League (ANCWL) in the Northern Cape has announced its support for Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa as the next president of the ruling party.
The extended PEC voted for their preferred candidate for the Presidency of the ANC as well as for members of the National Executive Committee (NEC).
Provincial secretary Topsy Vilakazi says while Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma was also nominated, the vote went in favour of Ramaphosa.
"While not everyone was happy with the decision, we decided it best to follow the tradition where the deputy president succeeds the president".
"There were those who felt that as women we need to support a woman but the votes went in favour of Ramaphosa.”
The decision flies in face of the decision by the ANCWL’s national leadership to support Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.
This week, the league slammed a report claiming the party would probably split should Dlamini- Zuma be elected president in December.
The report by Standard Bank was issued to advise clients on the state of the ANC’s election race and outlined the potential pitfalls if Dlamini-Zuma becomes president.
