ANC working on its challenges: Ramaphosa

ANC Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa says despite the ruling party having come under heavy fire lately, their voter registration campaign is going well.

Addressing the media during a door-to-door campaign in Mandeni on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast yesterday, Ramaphosa said ordinary people on the ground want to see a strong ANC.

Ramaphosa has admitted there are problems in the ruling party but that they are working on them.

“And the good thing about the ANC is that whenever it has challenges, it always addresses them openly, honestly and directly. And this is not the first time we face challenges in the ANC. Remember, we are 104 years old. We could not have grown up to be 104 years without problems and challenges,” he said.

The ANC is under increasing pressure to take decisive action against President Jacob Zuma.

The Constitutional Court recently found he failed to uphold, defend and respect the Constitution over the Nkandla saga.

Over the past two weeks, ANC veterans, religious bodies and civil society organisations have called for Zuma’s resignation.

Earlier in the day, Ramaphosa went on a walk-about in areas including Sundumbili township where he engaged residents and handed out t-shirts as part of voter registration weekend activities.

Nomfundo Mbanza is one of the locals who got to meet Ramaphosa.

“I just saw the deputy president. He came and asked me how I am going to vote. It was nice meeting him. I shook hands with him and he gave me a t-shirt. I’ve already registered to vote. I registered in March,” she said.
