ANC will not change Tshwane mayoral candidate

The ANC will not overturn its unpopular decision to make former minister of Agriculture and Land Affairs Thoko Didiza its mayoral candidate in Tshwane, ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa told News24.

This despite violent protests that erupted yesterday following the announcement.

"Its not about Thoko. It's about the ANC. The decision will not be changed. What's important now is to win votes. We will continue to engage with members on the ground," Kodwa said.

Kodwa said violence could not be done in the name of the ANC. He said ANC members must rise up and defend the party name.

"We cannot tolerate violence or use violence as justification. This violence can't be done in the name of the ANC. ANC members who understand the ANC must rise up and defend it. Anybody who will be mayor in Tshwane, we must rally behind that individual," he added.

Several buses have been torched in Tshwane's township this evening. Police told News24 they have deployed more of their members to contain the situation in Mamelodi, Atteridgeville and Soshaguve.
