ANC will consider strategy before start of coalition talks – analyst

A professor of political science says the top priority for the ANC's leaders will be to determine a strategy for the party's coalition negotiations.

The party's National Executive Committee is meeting this week.
The African National Congress lost its 30-year majority during last week’s general elections, garnering 40% of the vote.

In parliament, the ANC lost 71 seats but still has the most at 159.
"They have already identified secretary-general Fikile Mbalula to meet those negotiators,” says Professor Dirk Kotze from the University of South Africa.

“How are they going to approach the negotiations? Who will they approach there are essentially two options, one of the MK party with the EFF, and the other option is that of the DA, maybe together with the IFP.
"So it is very much a question about what will be their preferred option and how are they going to approach it."
