ANC will be united as it goes to conference

The African National Congress' (ANC) chairperson in Gauteng, Paul Mashatile, believes the party will unite as it heads into its national conference in December.

Mashatile delivered the closing address at the provincial policy conference in Irene.

"The ANC's new leadership must consist of the best within the organisation," he says.

He says the ANC will go into the upcoming policy conference united in the type of leadership they want for the movement, despite the challenges the party is facing.

"We are not uniting factions, we are choosing the best amongst us to lead the African National Congress," he says.

Mashatile says the province did not discuss the names of potential leaders during the conference but decided that the new leadership must be representative of the country's demographics.

"Let me make it clear to everybody. This conference was not for that. There is no name of anybody that was presented and defeated by conference," he says.

Meanwhile, the ANC in Gauteng's Hope Papo says proposals to expand the current ANC top 6 leadership will be dealt with at the upcoming police conference.

"There has not been any change. Discussions are happening but the current top 6 are still there. Discussions are about how we could retain the current structure," he says.
