ANC welcomes IEC move to reopen candidate registrations: Ramaphosa
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The African National Congress (ANC) has welcomed the IEC's decision to reopen candidate registrations for the upcoming local government elections.
It's a lifeline for the ruling party, which failed to register a portion of candidates by the deadline last month, citing technical glitches.
The ANC said in KwaZulu-Natal a number of submissions for ward candidates couldn't be made in areas like Illembe District Municipality, KwaDukuza, Ndwedwe, Mandeni, Umzinyathi and KwaMaphumulo.
Nationally, the names of 93 candidates need to be registered.
The IEC said on Monday that it will open reopen the candidate nomination list after the voter's registration weekend which has now been set for 18th and 19th of September.
President Cyril Ramaphosa's welcomed the news at the ANC's national executive committee Lekgotla.
He delivered the closing address on Monday night.
"We welcome the decision of the IEC to declare the weekend of 18 to 19 September as a registration weekend and agree with the IEC that there is an inextricable link between voter registration and the right to stand for public office.
"The ANC therefore further welcomes the decision to reopen candidate registration on 20th and 21 September. We believe this is in line with constitutional and legislative prescripts.
