Three women, aged between 34 and 60, were killed, while five others were injured after they were gunned down while standing outside the front gate of Buhlebethu Primary School.

According to witnesses, a black bakkie with five occupants opened fire towards the group with handguns before fleeing the scene.

It's alleged the ANC members were attending a committee meeting to conclude the process of selecting the ANC candidate for Ward 54.

ANC KZN spokesperson Nhlakanipho Ntombela has condemned the incident.

"No one can tell us what happened or what led to it. There were no incidents during the process of selecting the candidates. People were getting ready to vote and the car drove by and started shooting.

"It is the first incident of this kind. We have had more than 900 meetings selecting candidates across the province. Not a single one had had such an incident so we have no clue at this stage we are leaving everything at the hand of the police."

The motive of the killing is unknown.

KZN police are investigating three counts of murder and five attempted murders. No arrests have been made yet.
