ANC support base shrinking: Mantashe

If the local government elections were held this year, the ANC could have lost some of the country's biggest metros to the opposition.

This is according to the ruling party's organisational report presented to the National General Council yesterday.

The report was delivered by secretary general - Gwede Mantashe during a closed session.

The report suggests the ANC's electoral support has been declining since the 2004 elections.

Mantashe briefed the media following the closed session in Johannesburg.

"In the third National General Council held in Durban we had 649 000 members. In the Fifty-Fifty third national conference we had 1,2 Million members but we now have 769 000 members", he said.

"The reason for that is Gate-keeping - where people do not urge members to renew membership. Second is when there is no aggressive recruitment campaign unless it is in the run-up to conferences", Mantashe said.
