Ramaphosa announced Tito Mboweni as Nene's replacement yesterday

This after Nene testified at the Commission of Inquiry into State Capture that he had met the controversial Gupta family at their home on several occasions.

The ruling party also commended Nene for his commitment shown to the well-being of South Africa. Party spokesperson, Pule Mabe.

"We also welcome the appointment of comrade Tito Mboweni - who is an accomplished executive and leader, a renowned stalwart in the fight for liberation in our country, a former Reserve Bank governor, who has also served our organisation on various levels and currently serves in the national executive committee," Mabe said.

Mabe said Mboweni has an important role to play.

"We hope that this will further restore the faith and confidence of the people of South Africa in our ability to champion the developmental trajectory to move South Africa forward," he said.

Meanwhile, the SACP has welcomed Nene's resignation. The party acknowledged the now former Finance Minister's admission that he should have disclosed meeting with the controversial Gupta family long before the commission was established.

The party says Nene deserves recognition for being the first sitting minister to voluntarily appear before the Zondo Commission.
