African National Congress (ANC) President Cyril Ramaphosa says the party isn't desperate for coalition deals.
He says party relationships must be structured and have clear agreements.
Ramaphosa was speaking at a ‘Thank You’ rally for ANC supporters in Soweto.
"A number of parties are going around boastfully, saying 'We will not work with the ANC' but who said we want to work with them? Its's ok, we are not on our knees and if comrades, if we have to be in opposition, then we will be in opposition."
He says this year's local government polls sent a strong and clear message to the ruling party.
"And it is, yes, in the end, the worst electoral outcome for the ANC in 27 of democracy, but it was a difficult campaign. That we must admit, this is the first time comrades that the ANC share of the national vote has fallen below 50 percent.
The ANC's support declined in all provinces and we only archived an outright majority in to of the eight metropolitan municipalities in the country."
