'ANC members charged with corruption must step aside, or face suspension' - Ramaphosa

The African National Congress (ANC) leadership's handed a stern warning to members facing corruption or other criminal charges. 

ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa vows to recover jobs lost to Covid-19

"All members who have been charged with corruption or other serious crimes must step aside within 30 days, failing which they should be suspended in terms of rule 25 (70) of the ANC constitution," President Cyril Ramaphosa said. 


He delivered the message from the party's National Executive during the closing address late last night, following a four-day NEC meeting. 


Secretary-general Ace Magashule and former eThekwini mayor, Zandile Gumede are among the ANC bigwigs facing corruption charges.

Magashule, over a multi-million-rand asbestos audit contract -- awarded when he was premier of the Free State -- and Gumede, over a multi-million-rand Durban Solid Waste tender. 


Ramaphosa explains what will happen over the 30 day period. 


"The meeting emphasised that the 30 day period will be used to enable the implementation of the decision in line with the guidelines and this is not for the review of the decision."  


He explains how it's going to work. 


"The secretary-general's office will work with the provinces to identify all people affected and inform them about the decision. 

"ANC welcomed the decision by the ANC secretary-general comrade Ace Magashule to use this time to seek the counsel of past leaders of our movement and the ANC supports our secretary-general in this effort."
