ANC KZN: Zuma being projected as fugitive

The African National Congress in KZN says the courts have failed Jacob Zuma by issuing an arrest warrant for the former president.

The warrant was granted by the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Tuesday after Zuma's legal team handed up a medical certificate that the judge deemed unsatisfactory.

Zuma didn't show up for his corruption trial because he's apparently ill and being treated overseas.

ANC Provincial Secretary, Mdumiseni Ntuli briefed reporters in Durban yesterday,  on the party's two-day Lekgotla over the weekend.

"The perception of projecting the former president of the ANC and that of our country, as some kind of a fugitive is a problem for us. We know comrade Zuma as one of many of our leaders who are law abiding citizens," said Ntuli

Ntuli said the fact that Zuma is unwell is not an allegation.

He said what happened in court leads them to believe there's an agenda against the former president. "Is it normal that a sick note of the former president can be scrutinized in the court of law to the extent that it is doubted by the judges," Questions Ntuli.

"Unfortunately both the judge and legal team are not medical experts. Their disagreements of what constitutes what is a medical document is just an academic exercise. What we saw there is unfortunate, it should have not had happened, those are professionals. It created an impression in society that there is an agenda lying somewhere," he added.
