The CBD and roads around Durban City Hall became 'no-go zones' when municipal workers barricaded roads with their vehicles.

Some key routes heading into the city were also affected on several occasions this week.

Workers are demanding equal pay for equal work.

This after some MK Vets allegedly received significant salary increases.

The ANC's Mdumiseni Ntuli says someone needs to be held responsible for the chaos that engulfed the city.

He told reporters at a briefing in Durban earlier that a meeting with many of the province's leaders was held last night.

"We have held an extensive discussion  with the mayor and the leadership of the ANC in eThekwini and we have made ourselves very clear, we want them to ensure that there are consequences for wrongdoing -- irrespective of the people who are involved.

The ANC in the province says it wants the provincial government to get involved.

"It is our firm conviction that the current job grading, which has resulted in the unrest, must be halted with immediate effect."

Ntuli said the provincial government must be allowed to investigate and write a report so that the appropriate steps can be taken.

In a statement released by the DA in the wake of the chaos that played out in the city this week, the opposition party says Gumede must step down and eThekwini placed under administration so issues can be resolved.
