Members of the Umlazi community are up in arms after an ANC councillor was gunned down at Glebelands Hostel on Saturday night.
Zodwa Sibiya, who's been described as a dedicated councillor who stood firm against corruption, is reportedly the 62nd person to be killed at the hostel in two years.
A resident who addressed the media at the Umlazi V section yesterday says that the situation is getting worse.
He hopes the killers are caught, but he believes those in power are to blame.
"To lose a comrade like that one, yes we have a lot of comrades that we have lost already but this is the second lady that we are losing here in a level of leadership," he said.
Residents have appealed to the United Nations Human Rights Council and other human bodies in Africa to intervene in the violence happening at the Glebelands Hostel after 62 people were murdered in the vicinity.
Residents say they live in fear as they could be killed at any time.
He's accused the government of abandoning Glebelands hostel residents and ignoring claims that the killings are politically motivated.
"I'm talking about a woman now, there are children who woke up today with no mother. You can ask yourself now if the situation continues like this, how many people have to die before government takes serious steps against this situation happening here in Glebelands?" he asked.
eThekwini Municipality mayor, James Nxumalo described Sibiya as a brave leader who continued to serve the community in the face of the brutalities and loss of lives in her ward.
Nxumalo called on the police to make sure that perpetrators are brought to book.
