ANC clarifies Finance Minister shuffle

The ANC says it supports Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan's view that the decisions taken by Nhlanhla Nene during his tenure as Minister remain in place.

The ruling party's top six have been briefing the media in Johannesburg on the events that have unfolded in Cabinet over the past week.
The country has seen three Finance Ministers in less than a week.
ANC Deputy Secretary General, Jesse Duarte says the policy of the party is one of ensuring sound fiscal management.
"Deployees in government and State-owned enterprises must understand the sacrosanct nature of stringent management of resources.
"Given the prevailing economic climate, we appreciate the sentiment expressed by the Minister of Finance that there shall be no additional expenditure unless there is additional revenue which is sourced," she said.
She says while the rand is generally impacted whenever a Finance Minister is appointed, they did not anticipate how big the fallout would be.
"Obviously, when the name of Des Van Rooyen was mentioned, we thought there would be an impact. He's young. We thought there would be questions asked.
"What we didn't anticipate is enormity of that impact. So, it's not as if we didn't sit down and think through who this person is, what it would be like, how the country will reflect and so on," she said.
