Analyst: 'Eskom woes won't impact elections'

A political analyst feels it is unlikely the current anger and frustrations brought on by Eskom and it blunders, will have a negative impact at the polls from a ruling party perspective.

Eskom has been a hot topic recently, with public hearings into proposed tariff increases, President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement that the utility will be split into three separate entities and another bout of loadshedding.

Workers’ federation Cosatu also highlighted what it says is the threat of job losses that could be brought on by the restructure of the power utility, at nation-wide strikes this week.

Political analyst Protas Madlala believes voters won’t punish the ANC at the polls, even though opposition parties are mobilising around the mess at Eskom.

"There will be that anger, we are all angry. There will be those people but I don' think they are going to blame it on him (Ramaphosa). Even those who might doubt him publicly - I think behind the scenes, they see him as a person who is the last hope to save South Africa," he says.
