Amnesty SA: National Dialogue must address socio-economic issues

Amnesty International South Africa says next month's National Dialogue should not be a distraction from solving the country’s most urgent challenges.

On Friday, the North Gauteng High Court dismissed the Labour Party’s bid to stop the R700 million initiative.

The party argued that the dialogue, which aimsto unite the country around key social and political issues, is unconstitutional and a waste of public funds.

Amnesty’s Cassandra Dorasamy said the dialogue should not come at the expense of more pressing socio-economic challenges.

 "While we recognise the importance of building social cohesion and nation building, as well as starting a consultative process for the next national development plan, repeatedly we hear about people complaining of raw sewerage flowing through townships, inadequate housing, poor medical services, lack of quality education, high rates of gender-based violence, crime, and the list goes on."
