America remembers 9/11

Moments of silence have been observed across America, remembering almost 3000 lives that were lost during the 9/11 attacks.

President Barack Obama has honoured the victims of the September, 11 attacks - 14 years ago - with a short ceremony in Washington DC.


Bells have been tolling in New York City, while relatives of the victims, and survivors gathered at ground zero to remember the day and read the names of the victims.


The US president and first lady Michelle Obama and staff stepped out of the White House at 8:46 am local time to observe a moment of silence, followed by a single trumpet.


On September 11, 2001 - four hijacked American flights crashed in America claiming thousands of lives including hundreds of firefighters and police officers who rushed to the rescue. 


Two hit the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon outside Washington, D.C and another in Pennsylvania. This attack became known as 9/11 initiating the US' War on Terror - marking efforts to combat terrorism.
