Amajuba, Umgungundlovu drive MK Party’s early KZN lead

Vote counting continued on Thursday morning, with more than 3,000 voting districts completed nationally.

Officials have completed capturing seven per cent of KwaZulu-Natal's votes, amounting to more than 130,000 of the province's votes.

 

Former president Jacob Zuma's MK Party has almost 42% of the votes.

 

The African National Congress has about 20%, and the IFP is sitting at around 16%.

The Democratic Alliance is sitting on over 16 thousand votes.

 

The results online show that, at this stage, the majority of the MK party votes came from the Amajuba and Umgungundlovu Districts.

 

While ANC numbers are coming out of the Harry Gwala District.

 

On Wednesday evening, the IEC reported that KZN was one of the provinces that experienced a late surge in voters.

It led to snaking queues in major metropolitan areas such as Durban.


Political analyst Daniel Silke believes the MK Party will make a dent in the ANC's support. 

 

"The election is really for the ANC probably going to be over 50% or the ANC getting under 50% in KwaZulu-Natal. This will be an election in which MK will have a profound impact either way. If the MK vote holds up as early polls would suggest, the ANC may well be prevented from getting a 50% majority."
