An alleged hijacking suspect has been shot dead in a gun battle with police in Durban's Bayview area near Chatsworth this morning.
Officers on patrol noticed a suspicious looking vehicle travelling at a high speed in Sheridan Street at about 4:45am.
Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane says the occupants of the grey VW Polo realised the patrol vehicle was following them and allegedly opened fire.

Zwane says the police returned fire fatally wounding one suspect.
He says a second man was arrested while a third suspect fled the scene on foot.
''Police are still looking for the suspect who is still at large after fleeing the scene. It is possible that these suspects are linked to a number of hijackings that have been reported in the Chatsworth area and surroundings.
''An unlicensed firearm was also recovered during the operation,'' he said.
Police say the vehicle the suspects had been driving was hijacked in Chatsworth.
The arrested suspect is due in the Chatsworth Magistrate's Court soon on charges of attempted murder as well as being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and suspected stolen property.
