Alleged Durban drug kingpin granted bail
Updated | By Khatija Nxedlana
An alleged Durban drug lord and a suspected dealer have been granted bail in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court today and their matter has been postponed to February next year.
The pair were arrested last week on charges with drug dealing and possession of firearms.
Yaganathan Pillay - also known as Teddy Mafia - and Kasan Naidoo were released on bail of R200 000 and R100 000 respectively.
They are both required to report to the Chatsworth Police Station weekly and hand over their passports.
While the State was not opposed to bail, the defence submitted affidavits in support of the bail application.
The court heard that 58-year-old Pillay - who lives in Shallcross - has three previous convictions - one of them dating back to 1976 when he was accused of dealing in alcohol.
He also has a pending matter in the Durban Regional Court from 2012.
Advocate Gideon Scheltema told the court that 36-year-old Naidoo has no previous convictions or pending cases.
They're expected to plead not guilty to the charges against them.
