The suspect has been on the most wanted list, with KwaZulu-Natal police warning the public that he is dangerous.
He was nabbed in Morningside on Wednesday and apparently found in possession of an AK-47 an two other firearms as well as ammunition.
The Hawks' Simphiwe Mhlongo says the suspect had been sought for various other crimes in the province including attempted murder and cash-in-transit heists.
Mhlongo says they believe he had accomplices.
"Hawks members will make sure that he remains behind bars and we urge the communities to work together with us and give us information about the outstanding suspects," he said.
