Quality assurer Umalusi has given the department the green light to release the 2016 results next week.

Spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says schools are also preparing their matric certificates to ensure that the documents are ready for collection on 5 January.

"We always look forward to these days. We are very happy, we delighted that they have now said officially that we can proceed with the release of the results," he said.

Mhlanga says they'll also start setting up hearings for some 100 learners whose results are being withheld - following the leak of Maths Paper 2 in Limpopo.

"The hearings will commence in Janurary. There was some attempt to talk to them but after the exams were concluded a lot of them left the areas where they were attending school," he said.

Umalusi stressed that while it was satisfied that the matric finals were fair, valid and credible - it is disappointed that the exams were marred by group copying in KZN, Gauteng and Mpumalanga.
