Alarm at rise in KZN drowning deaths

Lifesaving SA says it has found that many beachgoers are swimming in sections of the beach where there are no lifeguards contributing to the number of drowning and near drowning incidents over the festive season.

''If you look at all the incidents that we've had so far, they've all been young children that have not been properly supervised and then drowned or adults that are swimming on beaches where there is no lifeguard protection.

''If you just follow those two basic rules, to look after your kids, swim between the red and yellow flag and where there are lifeguards to help you, you'll be fine,'' he said.

Spokesperson James Ross says it is imperative for swimmers to follow the rules especially over the next week when spring tides will cause stronger than normal rip currents making sea conditions more dangerous.

The volunteer organisation is also appealing for help with a 4x4 vehicle to assist with their response to surf rescue emergencies on the Day of Goodwill and New Years Day.
