Five of the seven suspects accused of killing Kiernan Forbes and his former manager, Tebello Motsoane made their first appearance in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Thursday morning.

In the courtroom, Tony Forbes came face to face with the suspects accused of his son’s murder.

Forbes calmly entered the courtroom before shaking the hands of Police Minister Bheki Cele and KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

He appeared sombre as the suspects, who wore masks and had hoods over their heads, lined up in the dock.

During a court intermission, Forbes told reporters that the suspects were hiding behind masks.

"People of South Africa should be able to see their faces. I don't understand how the system works ."

The suspects were eventually instructed to remove all coverings as they were in an open court.

Forbes said they look like ordinary people.

"Ordinary people that have committed something as horrible as this for money is a reflection of our society.

"It is difficult for all of us. We are here today incautiously optimistic. For me, it’s the start of the next stage, it is really the start to get closer to the truth, to find out who's really behind all of this."

The case has been postponed to next week for further investigation and bail verification.
