#AIDSSA2017: Researcher on HIV in Zimbabwe

Researchers are concerned about a possible link between physical and traumatic events in childhood and HIV in low-income populations.

The eighth South Africa Aids Conference is underway at the Durban ICC.
Simukai Shamu addressed delegates on research in Zimbabwe yesterday.

Shamu said pregnant women who were abused as children were more likely to take HIV tests.
"We have collected demographic information, childhood sexual abuse, physical abuse, sexual experiences, and partner demographics. We also abstracted HIV status information from the clinic records as well as participants' medical clinics." he said.
Meanwhile during the opening of the conference yesterday - UNAIDS Country Director, Erasmus Morah commended the SA government's efforts to combat the spread of the HIV virus.
